Hello,

In-Depth Study of King Faisal's Life Urged
Arab News

RIYADH, 11 May 2008 - A three-day seminar on King Faisal called for the need to have more in-depth studies on the late king and his contributions, especially by students of higher education at Saudi universities.

Dr. Fahd Al-Sammary, secretary-general of King Abdul Aziz Museum, said the seminar's participants emphasized the need to record the statements and experiences of those people who lived during the time of King Faisal and other Saudi monarchs.

Participants called on the museum to take the lead on this. "The King Abdul Aziz Museum and King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies (KFCRIS) should also document King Faisal's foreign policy toward Arab and Islamic countries and his efforts to strengthen Islamic solidarity," the Saudi Press Agency said, citing the seminar's recommendations.

Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman, chairman of the museum, opened the seminar on Tuesday and paid tribute to one of the Islamic world's greatest leaders. "I saw in him a true believer and an intelligent politician," the governor said, adding that King Faisal was a staunch supporter of Islamic causes.

"The seminar was significant as it focused on a person who lived by King Abdul Aziz during the Kingdom's unification," said Prince Turki Al-Faisal, chairman of KFCRIS. "King Faisal had made considerable contributions to the Kingdom's development and in taking the country to a new phase of progress and prosperity," he added.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Prince Turki said the US had threatened to use force against Saudi Arabia in 1973 after King Faisal, along with other Arab leaders, imposed an oil embargo on countries that supported Israel during the October War. Prince Turki, who was an adviser at the Royal Court in 1973, said the king was not shaken by the US threat and stood firm.

The King Faisal Center for Research & Islamic Studies (KFCRIS) also held an exhibition on King Faisal titled "Witness & Martyr" on the sidelines of the seminar, at which 34 research papers were presented. New information and documents about the king were collected from several countries, including the US and Britain. On display were the king's possessions and speeches, and films and pictures about him.

The seminar attracted a large number of visitors including foreign diplomats and journalists.

"About 20 years ago I had read a book on King Faisal," said a Chinese visitor. "Since then I have been very much impressed by the king and I have bought so many books about his life," he added.

Muhammad Anwar, 75, a Pakistani engineer visited the show with his family. "I started working in the Kingdom about 40 years ago during the time of King Faisal. All Muslims love King Faisal for his courageous decisions and his efforts in serving Islamic causes," he said.

The show begins with a picture of the king aged 13 taken during a visit to Europe.

Princess Seeta bint Abdul Aziz opened the show for women yesterday. Princess Sara Al-Faisal said the exhibition highlighted the king's contributions to the Kingdom's development. "It sheds light on various phases in King Faisal's life and his struggle for Arab and Islamic causes."

The exhibition will continue at the National Museum of the King Abdul Aziz Historical Center for two months before moving to Abha, Makkah and Dammam and then to neighboring Gulf and Arab countries. re thank you sister kadara akujo in london. from me Majid Amonye & Family. in vancouver, western canada. Poor nations must repay British climate 'aid': report Sat May 17, 7:33 AM ET

LONDON (AFP) - Poor countries will have to pay back aid given to them by Britain in an international aid project that was supposed to help them adapt to climate change, The Guardian newspaper said Saturday.

The 800-million-pound scheme was announced in November, but the daily reported that almost all the money offered by Prime Minister Gordon Brown would have to be repaid with interest.

The aid was expected to be made in direct grants to countries suffering storms, droughts and rises in sea levels linked to climate change.

But the paper said it had has learned that the money is not additional British aid and will in fact be administered by the World Bank, mainly in the form of concessionary loans which have to be paid back with interest added.

It said a letter signed by two government ministers showed that Britain has been urging its fellow Group of Eight countries to also contribute to the new fund, to be formally launched in July at the G8's annual summit in Japan.

"UK contributions from the environmental transformation fund... will need to be primarily concessional loans," the letter, signed by junior environment minister Phil Woolas and international aid counterpart Gareth Thomas, said, according to the Guardian.

"We will also talk to other donor countries about the possibility of grants."

Countries contacted by the paper condemned the loans, while development groups WWF and ActionAid both said funds for climate adaptation should be additional to aid in the form of grants.

"We need urgently to prepare for climate change, but we are not in a position to pay back loans," a spokesman for the Bangladesh high commission in London was quoted as saying.

"The climate situation has not been created by us. The money should come spontaneously from rich countries and not be a loan."

An unnamed senior Brazilian diplomat was reported to be "indignant" that poor countries should have to borrow money to prepare for the effects of climate change, adding to their debt.

There was no immediate comment from the Department for International Development when contacted by AFP.

'I won't let bitterness destroy us'
Press Assoc. - Saturday, May 17 12:45 pmThe mother of murdered schoolboy Jimmy Mizen has vowed she will not let bitterness destroy her family.

Arriving at a memorial service for the popular rugby-playing teenager, Margaret Mizen spoke of how her faith had given her strength. She urged people not to blame the family of the suspect in Jimmy's killing.

"Anger breeds anger, and bitterness will destroy my family if I'm not careful - and I won't allow that to happen," she said.

Jimmy's parents paid tribute to their son. Fighting back tears and comforting each other as they spoke, Barry and Margaret Mizen spoke of the importance of hugs and called on people to look out for each other as they dealt with their grief.

Mrs Mizen, 55, said her son was born on Cup Final Day in 1992 and described him as a "gorgeous baby".

Mr and Mrs Mizen arrived at the Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Lee, south-east London, with Jimmy's brothers and sisters. The family comforted each other and were surrounded by hundreds of friends and well-wishers.

More than 500 people packed into the church for the service and hundreds more stood outside in the pouring rain. Crying as they stood under umbrellas they listened to the prayers and hymns relayed through the speakers.

Mrs Mizen said that her sister had recently summed up Jimmy by describing him as "every mother's perfect son". She said her faith had helped her: "Without the faith I have I would not be standing here now - I would be crumbling." She added: "The whole community have rallied around and I'm just so blessed."

Mr Mizen, 56, put his hand on his wife's back and fought back tears as he spoke. Mr Mizen thanked people for attending the service, for sending messages of support, and the police.

Mr Mizen said that donations they have received will go to the scout minibus appeal and the bus will be called the Jimmy bus.

PM to address church assembly
Press Assoc. - Saturday, May 17 09:25 amGordon Brown will address a church gathering where Margaret Thatcher set out her political philosophy 20 years ago.

The Prime Minister will speak at the annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland where Mrs Thatcher, now Lady Thatcher, set out her credo.

The event at a building on The Mound in Edinburgh is the May gathering of the Church of Scotland's ruling body. Mr Brown's father was a Church of Scotland minister.

Mrs Thatcher's "Sermon on the Mound" to the general assembly on May 21, 1988 dwelt much on personal responsibility, and was attacked by her critics.

"We are all responsible for our own actions," she told the gathering. We can't blame society if we disobey the law. We simply can't delegate the exercise of mercy and generosity to others."

Mr Brown's spokesman said that nothing should be read into the fact that the Prime Minister's speech comes almost exactly 20 years after Lady Thatcher's famous address.

At a regular daily briefing of reporters in Westminster, the spokesman declined to reveal details of the contents of the speech, but said it would not focus particularly on Scottish issues.

Asked if Mr Brown, like Lady Thatcher, would use the occasion to discuss his own moral beliefs, the spokesman said: "When speaking to a Church of Scotland audience, it would be surprising if he didn't talk about his own upbringing, but it has not been the Prime Minister's habit to talk about his own individual religious views."

A dark episode...

Canada's genocidal program
against Native people -
expressed most recently by
residential schools for native
children - persisted well into the
1960s.

Torture, sexual abuse, even
murder of children at the hands
of the priests and nuns who the
government arranged to operate
these "schools."

Ex-Minister Kevin Annett courageously
brought this story to light in the
well documented film:

"Unrepentant: Kevin Annett and
Canada's Genocide."

The film won best international
documentary at the Los Angeles
Film Festival in 2006.

Palestinian Groups Ready to Face Israeli Operations
Hisham Abu Taha, Arab News

GAZA CITY, 18 May 2008 — The Palestinian militant groups said yesterday that they are ready to face any Israeli military operation in Gaza Strip. Their statements came after reports said that Israel is considering an escalation of military attacks into the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Abu Obida, the spokesman of Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said “I think that the occupation is unable to carry out any large-scale ground operation but it could target our homes and assassinate people from the air.” He added that the way to Gaza will not be garnished with flowers.

In the same context, the Popular Resistance Committees said yesterday that the threat of “Zionists” continued aggression against the Palestinian people in the besieged Gaza Strip will be faced by more steadfastness and resistance strikes inside Israel.

Abu Mujahed, the spokesman of Al-Naser Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, said “resistance options are many, multiple and open. If the Zionist enemy tried tampering in the Gaza Strip, then it will be faced by unexpected resistance strikes.” He added that the “Zionist enemy” has no ability to stop the resistance. Earlier this week, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot reported that the Israeli military is considering assassinating senior resistance leaders affiliated to Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Recently, Israel’s Army’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, dropped his opposition to a ground offensive in Gaza, security official said.

The Islamic Jihad movement, which is considered as the second largest Islamist force in the Gaza Strip, said it was ready to face any aggression or invasion against the Strip. Abu Ahmed, a spokesman of Al-Quds Brigades, said “the Brigades along with other factions will be fully prepared to defend the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip by all means.”

In a new violence yesterday, Israeli troops arrested ten Palestinians during an invasion carried out in Al-Showka village southeast of Rafah city in the southern of the Gaza Strip.

Local sources and witnesses said that seven Israeli tanks and four bulldozers backed by warplanes rolled into Al-Showka village early yesterday and leveled vast arable lands in addition to destroying seven chicken farms. They added that the soldiers broke into some houses in the area, searched them and arrested ten residents.
